In the quiet pre-dawn hours of September 18, 2022, a wave of violence shattered the calm of a Knoxville, Tennessee neighborhood, ending the life of 38-year-old Samuel Whitfield. A Black/African American man, Whitfield was at a residence on Wilson Avenue in the Park City area when the tragic events unfolded. Shortly before 5 a.m., a vehicle, its make and model unknown, drove by the home and multiple shots were fired from it towards the house.
Struck by the gunfire, Whitfield sustained
fatal injuries. In a desperate attempt to save him, he was transported by a personal vehicle to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Tragically, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. The sudden and brutal nature of his passing left the community in shock.
The Knoxville Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit immediately began an investigation into the deadly shooting. Investigators interviewed several potential witnesses in an effort to identify those responsible for the drive-by shooting. Despite their efforts, no suspects have been publicly identified or arrested in connection with Samuel Whitfield's death. The case remains an active and ongoing investigation, with authorities appealing to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest and bring a measure of justice to a grieving family and community.
