In the spring of 2014, the Beecher Terrace housing complex in Louisville, Kentucky, was the scene of a tragic and violent series of events that left a mother mourning the loss of two sons within a matter of weeks. On May 20th, 29-year-old Robert Hebert, a Black male, was involved in a fatal shootout that claimed his life and the life of another man, Dwight Patterson Jr. The altercation reportedly erupted over a dice game, escalating quickly into a deadly exchange of gunfire.
When the violence subsided, both Hebert and Patterson lay dead, having fatally wounded each other.
The investigation into the deaths of Robert Hebert and Dwight Patterson Jr. concluded that the two men were responsible for each other's demise. As a result, authorities made no further arrests in connection with the deadly shootout. The incident, however, cast a dark shadow over the community, highlighting the devastating consequences of gun violence. The loss was particularly acute for the Hebert family, who were already reeling from a recent tragedy.
Just three weeks before Robert Hebert's death, his brother, Johnny Hebert, had also been shot and killed at the very same location. The back-to-back killings of her two sons left their mother, Jeanette Hebert, in a state of unimaginable grief. While the case of Robert's death was closed without any outside suspects, the investigation into his brother's murder did lead to an indictment. A grand jury brought charges against a man named Leroy Morris for the murder of Johnny Hebert, offering a small measure of legal process in the face of the family's profound loss.
