On a spring day in Knoxville, Tennessee, a dispute born from a text message escalated into a tragedy that would claim the life of a young father. Alexander Lamar West, a 25-year-old African American man, was fatally shot in the head on May 4, 2018, at the Caprice Apartments on Valley View Drive. The incident was the culmination of a heated argument with 36-year-old Antonio Gipson, who was dating the mother of West's son.
The disagreement centered on the upbringing of the child, a sensitive subject that ultimately led to a fatal confrontation.
The argument turned violent when Gipson used a. 25-caliber pistol to shoot West at close range. Following the shooting, West was rushed to the UT Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries. In the hours that followed, investigators were able to contact Gipson, who subsequently agreed to turn himself in to the Knoxville Police Department. His initial escape from the scene was in a white or cream-colored Chrysler 300. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, held on a $750,000 bond.
The legal proceedings that followed brought a measure of closure to the case. In November, a jury convicted Antonio Gipson of second-degree murder for the death of Alexander Lamar West. He was sentenced to serve 40 years in prison for the killing. In addition to the murder conviction, Gipson also received a concurrent 10-year sentence for the unlawful possession of a weapon. The case highlighted the devastating consequences of a domestic dispute that ended a young man's life and resulted in a long prison sentence for the perpetrator.
