On the evening of December 3, 2020, Caitlyn Marie Kaufman, a 26-year-old female, was driving her Mazda CX-5 SUV along Interstate 440 in Nashville, Tennessee. She was on her way to St. Thomas West Hospital, where she worked as an intensive care nurse, a job she had moved to the city for in 2018. Her shift was scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m., and it's believed the fatal encounter occurred between 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Later that night, around 9:00 p.m., a Metro Parks officer noticed her vehicle stopped on the shoulder of the highway and, assuming it was a single-vehicle accident, pulled over to assist. Upon inspection, the officer discovered Kaufman deceased inside her car, which was riddled with bullet holes. It was determined that a single gunshot, one of at least six fired into her vehicle, had killed her.
The seemingly random and senseless act of violence prompted a significant investigation. With few initial leads, law enforcement relied on public assistance, and a substantial reward was offered for information. The breakthrough came when a tip led investigators to two suspects: Devaunte Hill and James Cowan. Cell phone data was crucial in placing both men at the scene of the crime. Within about a week of the shooting, both Hill, then 21, and Cowan, then 28, were arrested and subsequently charged with criminal homicide. Investigators determined the motive was likely road rage, stemming from an incident where Kaufman allegedly cut off the suspects' vehicle on the interstate. Neither man had any prior connection to Kaufman.
The case proceeded to trial, where Devaunte Hill and James Cowan faced charges of first-degree murder. During the trial, Hill took the stand and confessed to the shooting. He testified that he and Cowan were under the influence of drugs when Kaufman's vehicle cut them off. Hill claimed the sudden braking of their car startled him, and in a moment he described as an irrational and 'stupid decision,' he picked up a gun and fired multiple shots at Kaufman's SUV. He maintained that Cowan, who was driving, had no part in the shooting itself. The prosecution argued that the act was premeditated and that both men acted with intent.
After more than 11 hours of deliberation, the jury delivered a split verdict in January 2023. James Cowan was acquitted of all charges and found not guilty, with the jury concluding he was not responsible for Kaufman's death. Devaunte Hill was found guilty of the lesser charge of second-degree murder. Hill later expressed remorse for his actions, apologizing to Kaufman's family for the pain he had caused. In March 2023, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder.
