In the summer of 2018, the life of Tonya Davis Bell, a 42-year-old woman from Nashville, Tennessee, was tragically cut short. On the evening of June 24th, a heated argument between Tonya and her husband, Cleveland Lamont Bell, escalated to a fatal conclusion inside their home on Southside Court in the Edgehill neighborhood. During the dispute, Cleveland Bell shot his wife in the head, ending her life.
Following the shooting, Cleveland Bell, who was 45 years old at the time, contacted a
friend who then drove him back to the scene of the crime. His friend also alerted the Metro Nashville Police Department to the shooting. Upon their arrival, authorities found Tonya Davis Bell deceased. In a significant turn of events, Cleveland Bell turned himself in to the police and confessed to the murder of his wife, admitting to shooting her during their argument.
As a result of his confession and the evidence at the scene, Cleveland Lamont Bell was arrested and charged with criminal homicide. He was subsequently held in custody without the possibility of bail. The case brought the devastating impact of domestic violence to the forefront within the Nashville community. Tonya Davis Bell was remembered as a beloved mother to her children, Tana Burgett and Jamari Bell, and a cherished daughter to her mother, Mattie Britton. Her funeral was held at the Pleasant Green Church in Nashville, where family and friends gathered to mourn her untimely death.
