In Nashville, Tennessee, on October 17, 2019, a 30-year-old Black / African American woman named Temptress "Chippie" Peebles was shot and killed outside of her Morena Street home. The incident unfolded in the afternoon as Peebles was arguing with her ex-boyfriend, Brandon Horton, who was also 30 at the time. Tragically, Peebles' 8-year-old daughter witnessed the shooting. After being shot, Peebles was found lying in the street, and her daughter ran to a neighbor's house for help.
The killing was the culmination of a history of domestic violence that Peebles had reportedly endured. Horton had a criminal record that included convictions for facilitating second-degree murder and attempted aggravated robbery. In the months leading up to her death, Peebles had sought help multiple times. In July 2019, she reported that Horton had kicked in her door and pointed a gun at her. Just days before the fatal shooting, on October 6, Horton allegedly attacked her again, throwing her to the ground and punching her in the face before stealing her purse from her car. At the time of the murder, Horton was already wanted on outstanding warrants for domestic assault, burglary of a motor vehicle, and probation violation related to these prior incidents.
Following the shooting, a manhunt for Brandon Horton was initiated by law enforcement. He fled the scene in a black midsize Chevrolet SUV. The day after the shooting, acting on information that Horton was at the River Retreat Apartments on Cheyenne Boulevard, Juvenile Crime Task Force officers and North Precinct detectives set up surveillance. Horton eventually came out of an apartment and surrendered without incident. He was arrested and jailed on a bond of $1,330,000. When taken to the North Precinct for questioning, he refused to answer detectives' questions. Horton is now awaiting trial on charges of killing Peebles.
