In the early evening of October 9, 2021, violence shattered the quiet of a northwest Shelby County neighborhood, leaving a family grieving and a community in shock. On that Saturday, just before 6:00 p.m., deputies responded to a shooting in the 5000 block of Blacksmith Drive. There they found 33-year-old Maurice Walker suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to Regional One in critical condition, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he tragically died.
The investigation into the death of the male victim moved swiftly. The day after the fatal shooting, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of 26-year-old Denorius Butler. He was charged with second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, employing a firearm with intent to commit a dangerous felony, and felony drug charges.
As detectives continued to piece together the events of that evening, their work led them to a second individual. A little over a month later, on November 11, 2021, the sheriff's office confirmed that a second man had been charged in connection with Walker's death. Twenty-two-year-old Tyler Wilson was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder, marking another significant development in the pursuit of justice for Maurice Walker.
