On the morning of Friday, August 18, 2023, Tomanuel Benson, a Black/African American male, was shot and killed at a BP gas station in Memphis, Tennessee. Mr. Benson was the brother of Memphis rapper Blac Youngsta. The shooting occurred around 9:30 a.m. on South Parkway East, near the intersection of South Lauderdale Street. When Memphis Police Department officers arrived, they found Mr. Benson with a gunshot wound.
He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation quickly led police to identify a suspect. Days after the shooting, the Memphis Police Department announced they were searching for Randy Ewing and had secured a warrant for his arrest. He was wanted for second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder in connection with the incident. A reward of up to $5,000 was offered for information that could lead to his capture.
After a months-long manhunt, Ewing was located and arrested in February 2024. The U.S. Marshals Service captured him after a foot chase along Creighton Avenue. In addition to the murder and attempted murder warrants, Ewing was also charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun, evading arrest, and theft of a firearm.
The case against Randy Ewing concluded before it could proceed to trial. According to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, Ewing died on May 23, 2024. Following his death, court records were updated on September 16, 2024, to show that the case against him was officially disposed of and the charges were abated by death.
