On April 11, 2010, law enforcement officials in Fort Wayne, Indiana, were summoned to a residence on Huestis Avenue where they discovered the body of 33-year-old Carmen Ramos. The female victim was found lying face down in her home, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The gruesome discovery was made by family members who had grown concerned after losing contact with her.
Investigators determined that the shooting had likely occurred days prior to the discovery of her body, marking a tragic end to what authorities later described as a volatile domestic situation.
Detectives immediately focused their attention on Thomas Howard Manjarez, the father of the victim's three children, who had a documented history of domestic violence against her. Court records revealed that Ramos had filed for a protective order against Manjarez earlier that year, citing incidents where he had beaten her and threatened her life. The protective order had been active until just days before the murder, when it was reportedly canceled on April 1. Following the shooting, Manjarez fled the state, prompting a manhunt that extended beyond Indiana's borders.
Authorities eventually tracked the suspect to Texas, where he was apprehended by police in January 2011, months after the homicide occurred. He was extradited back to Indiana to face charges related to the killing. Although he was initially charged with murder, legal proceedings led to a plea agreement in June 2011. Manjarez pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter, admitting his role in the death of the mother of his children.
During the sentencing hearing in July 2011, the courtroom atmosphere was emotionally charged as family members of the victim expressed their grief and desire for a harsher penalty. A judge sentenced Manjarez to 40 years in prison for the crime, with an additional period of probation to follow his release.
