In the summer of 2021, the life of 20-year-old Shelby Erin Vonholdt, a female, was tragically cut short in Fort Wayne, Indiana. On the evening of June 20th, police responded to a 911 hang-up call from a residence on Eileen Street. Upon their arrival, they discovered Shelby suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to her chest and abdomen. She was rushed to a local hospital, the very same one where she had been born, but succumbed to her injuries two days later on June 22, 2021.
Before she
died, Shelby was able to identify her shooter, naming a woman called 'Valerie'. This crucial piece of information, combined with footage from a doorbell camera that captured the suspect's vehicle leaving the scene, quickly pointed investigators toward Valerie Rose Hardiek. The motive for the violent act was determined to be jealousy; Hardiek was reportedly attached to someone that Vonholdt had begun seeing. The murder was deemed to be premeditated.
Following the shooting, Hardiek fled to Van Wert County, Ohio. Her behavior became increasingly erratic. She was observed at a convenience store for over an hour, seemingly attempting to read customers' credit card numbers. Her threatening actions escalated when she pointed a gun at a male customer, which led to her arrest. This arrest in Ohio ultimately connected her to the murder of Shelby Vonholdt.
Valerie Rose Hardiek, who was 23 at the time, was charged with the murder of Shelby Vonholdt. In July 2022, she entered a plea of guilty but mentally ill. While a felony firearm charge was dismissed as part of the plea agreement, the judge sentenced her to the maximum term of 65 years in prison for the murder. During the sentencing, it was revealed that Hardiek had a difficult upbringing, including suffering abuse as a child and had received treatment for mental illness. However, the judge also noted her escalating criminal history. The firearm used in the murder was ordered to be destroyed.
