In the city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, a loving mother and respected business owner, Maria Del Socorro Ambriz Maldonado, born in Michoacan, Mexico, was tragically killed. The 39-year-old woman's life was cut short on the evening of Saturday, January 29, 2022, in a violent act that shook her community.
The harrowing ordeal began when a man dressed entirely in black and armed with a short-barreled rifle forced his way into Maria's home on Standish Drive.
Her two children were present and witnessed their mother being threatened before she was forcibly taken from her home. The assailant compelled Maria to drive her own SUV. Just a few blocks away, in the area of Fairfax Avenue and Standish Drive, the suspect fired approximately 30 rounds into the vehicle, ending her life. The Allen County Coroner's Office later confirmed her death was a homicide caused by gunshot wounds.
Following the shooting, the suspect was captured on a neighbor's surveillance camera fleeing the scene on foot, carrying the rifle and a black backpack. The Fort Wayne Police Department launched an investigation, appealing to the public for any information and asking residents to review their security camera footage. Maria was described by those who knew her as a kind, quiet, and hardworking single mother who was loved by her community. She was the owner of Jenny's Bakery, a local business she had operated for over nine years.
As of late 2024, the case remained open, with law enforcement continuing to seek information about the suspect and a motive for the brutal crime. The community was left to mourn the loss of a beloved member while the search for a resolution continued.
