In the quiet city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, a tragedy unfolded on December 24, 2021, forever altering the lives of one family. Brittany Noel Deck, a 30-year-old White/Caucasian female, was found deceased in her home. Her death was the result of a gunshot wound to the head, and the Allen County Coroner's Office subsequently ruled it a homicide. Remembered by her loved ones as a loving mother and a caring individual, Brittany's life was cut short in a moment of violence.
The investigation
into her death quickly focused on Jacob Chacon, with whom Brittany was involved in a tumultuous relationship. On the day of her death, a confrontation erupted between the two over an alleged affair. The argument escalated, with Chacon reportedly throwing a neck brace that struck Brittany in the face. Fearful for her safety, she followed him upstairs. Witnesses reported hearing Brittany's plea, 'Jacob, please don't,' followed by the sound of a gunshot. When a witness entered the room, Chacon was holding a bleeding Brittany. He instructed the witness to call 911 before he fled the scene.
Jacob Chacon was later apprehended and charged with murder in connection with Brittany Deck's death. The legal proceedings that followed saw a different outcome than the initial charge. During his trial, Chacon was acquitted of murder but found guilty of reckless homicide and the use of a firearm in the commission of a crime. In February 2024, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison—five years for reckless homicide and an additional ten years for the firearm enhancement. As part of his sentence, Chacon was also ordered to pay over $13,000 in restitution to Brittany's grieving family.
