In the early morning hours of May 30, 2019, tragedy struck the Chapel Oaks apartment complex in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Police officers responded to a 911 call reporting an armed robbery around 1:15 a.m. Upon their arrival at the scene on Buchanan Street, they discovered a victim lying under a pavilion behind the leasing office. The individual, identified as Arriana Lee Henderson, had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
She was a 20-year-old Black female who was the youngest of four siblings and a devoted mother to a young daughter.
Investigators quickly turned their attention to a suspect named Leon Lumpkin. The day following the shooting, police tracked Lumpkin to an apartment at the Villages of Hanna, where he had broken in. Authorities surrounded the building, leading to a brief standoff before Lumpkin surrendered and was taken into custody. During the interrogation process, Lumpkin allegedly claimed he targeted Henderson due to a belief that she was associated with a rival gang, a characterization that her grieving family and friends vehemently denied, describing her instead as a loving parent with dreams of becoming a chef.
The legal proceedings against Lumpkin culminated in a plea agreement. In October 2019, he pleaded guilty to charges of murder, robbery, and battery. Although he later attempted to withdraw his confession by claiming he was coerced by investigators, a judge denied the request, ruling that the statement was voluntary. On January 7, 2022, Leon Lumpkin appeared in Allen Superior Court where he was sentenced to 65 years in prison for the senseless act of violence that ended Arriana Henderson's life.
