On the evening of January 3, 2023, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, 18-year-old Jocelyn Marlene Bolf was fatally shot while inside a vehicle, marking the city's first homicide of the year. The young woman, a mother, was with her boyfriend at the time of the attack, which also left him in a life-threatening condition. The shooting occurred in the 2500 block of South Anthony Boulevard.
When police arrived at the scene around 7:00 p.m., they found Jocelyn deceased from multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the tragic event swiftly led to the arrest of three suspects: Rapheal Brown, 23, Rashun Carter, 31, and Swanyea Taylor, 23. All three men were charged with murder, attempted murder, and criminal recklessness. The motive behind the shooting was revealed to be a revenge plot stemming from a personal dispute. Swanyea Taylor, who shared a child with Jocelyn, was reportedly upset that she had a new boyfriend. This jealousy appears to have been the catalyst for the violent confrontation.
The events leading up to the fatal shooting began the previous day, on January 2, 2023, when a group of men went to a recording studio looking for Jocelyn's boyfriend, Yusef Muhammad, with whom they had 'beef'. Later that night, shots were fired at the studio. The following day, Carter, Brown, and Taylor were together, and the conversation turned to their anger about Jocelyn's new relationship. The three men, all armed, had a pregnant acquaintance of Brown's drive them to a gas station. They then directed her to a Corner Store where they located Jocelyn and her boyfriend and opened fire on their vehicle.
In April 2024, Rashun Carter was the first of the three to face a jury. He was found guilty of murder and criminal recklessness. The jury, however, could not reach a verdict on the attempted murder charge. In June 2024, Carter was sentenced to 85 years in prison for his role in Jocelyn's death. Rapheal Brown subsequently pleaded guilty and was awaiting a sentencing hearing scheduled for July 15, 2024. The third suspect, Swanyea Taylor, was scheduled to go on trial in August 2024.
