On Halloween evening, October 31, 2021, a dispute at a child's birthday party in Knoxville, Tennessee, tragically ended the life of 26-year-old J'Michael Dossett. Dossett, an African American male from Macon, Georgia, was in Knoxville at a home on Catalpa Avenue when the fatal incident occurred.
The conflict reportedly began over a trivial matter: a birthday cupcake. An autopsy report indicated that during the party, a child playfully smeared frosting in the hair of Dossett's child.
This seemingly innocent act upset Dossett's ex-girlfriend, leading to a heated argument between her and Dossett. As the confrontation escalated, the woman's 16-year-old brother intervened, stepping between the two adults.
According to reports, Dossett then fired his. 380 caliber pistol into the air as a warning shot. In response, the 16-year-old male drew a 9mm pistol and shot Dossett four times. Emergency services were called to the residence around 6:30 p.m., where they found Dossett with at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to the UT Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, the Knoxville Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit launched an investigation. The 16-year-old suspect fled the scene before officers arrived. However, he later turned himself in to the authorities. Due to his age, his identity has not been publicly released. He was charged with voluntary manslaughter on a juvenile petition, with the possibility of additional charges pending as the investigation continues.
