On a Sunday afternoon in Knoxville, Tennessee, a domestic dispute escalated into a fatal act of violence that claimed the life of 42-year-old Jerome Nance. The male victim was shot and killed on January 30, 2022, in the 900 block of Atlantic Avenue following an argument earlier in the day.
The investigation, led by the Knoxville Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit, quickly identified 59-year-old Johnny McBee as the suspect. Investigators determined that McBee had argued with Nance because Nance was romantically involved with McBee's niece. During the initial confrontation, McBee threatened to get a gun and kill Nance. Later that day, both men arrived at the Atlantic Avenue address where McBee exited his vehicle with a revolver and shot Nance. McBee fled the scene before police arrived.
Following the incident, law enforcement issued warrants for McBee's arrest on charges of first-degree murder and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. McBee, who had a history of six prior felony convictions including armed robbery and assault with intent to murder, was considered armed and dangerous.
After a three-day trial, a jury found Johnny Robert McBee guilty of first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon. During the trial, prosecutors presented the case as a 'senseless' killing. McBee claimed that his revolver had 'accidentally discharged' multiple times. On July 18, 2024, a Knox County Criminal Court Judge sentenced the 61-year-old McBee to life in a state correctional facility for the murder of Jerome Nance.
