In June 2008, a violent and bizarre altercation at a Knoxville, Tennessee bar ended the life of 45-year-old Anthony Laymon 'Tony' Ford. The man responsible for his death was Herbert Mike Merritt, who was 47 at the time. The events unfolded at Friend's Sports Bar and Grill in the Halls community, a place where Merritt was already known by the nickname 'Mad Max.' On the night of the incident, Merritt, who had been previously barred from the establishment for threatening someone with a knife, entered the bar in what witnesses described as an angry and determined state.
Despite being asked to leave by an off-duty employee, Susie Jacobs, Merritt became defiant. When Ford and other patrons came to her side, Merritt escalated the confrontation. He threw off his leather jacket, pulled out a gun, and shot Ford multiple times. As chaos erupted and patrons fled, Merritt remained in the bar. A standoff with the Knox County Sheriff's Office SWAT team ensued, lasting for two hours. During this time, the grim scene inside the bar took an even more gruesome turn.
Following the shooting, Merritt mutilated Ford's body, carving a piece of flesh from his chest. He later claimed to have eaten a portion of it, believing it to be Ford's heart, though it was determined to be a piece of his lung. After the standoff, Merritt was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
During his trial in March 2011, Merritt's defense attorney argued that he was in a psychotic state at the time of the killing, stemming from a history of mental health issues and an abusive childhood. The defense claimed that an infection had caused brain damage and that Merritt had been experiencing hallucinations in the months leading up to the incident. However, the prosecution contended that Merritt was angry after a fight with his girlfriend and was looking for a confrontation. They pointed to the fact that he came to the bar armed with both a handgun and a knife, with a shotgun in his vehicle. After five hours of deliberation, the jury found Herbert Mike Merritt guilty of first-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison, with the requirement to serve at least 51 years.
