Derrion Arket Childs Jr., a 21-year-old male from Memphis, Tennessee, was fatally shot on the night of November 23, 2021. When officers arrived, they found Childs critically injured. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his wounds. Two other individuals were with Childs at the time of the shooting; a woman who sustained non-critical injuries and a man who was unharmed.

Surveillance footage from the scene showed at least one person approaching the vehicle Childs was in and opening fire. Further shots were reportedly fired from another car. Police later announced they were searching for suspects who fled the scene in a dark-colored Infiniti SUV and a dark-colored Jeep Cherokee and released images of the alleged assailants to the public.

Childs, an aspiring comedian known as 'Dmuney,' had recently made comments on social media regarding the high-profile murder of Memphis rapper Young Dolph, which had occurred just days earlier. Many online observers believed his posts were jokes made at the late rapper's expense, leading to theories that his death was a retaliatory act.
However, Childs's sister, Shameccia Mason, vehemently denied these claims, stating that his words were taken out of context. She explained that he was not making light of Young Dolph's death but was instead commenting on the pervasive and senseless violence in their city, comparing Memphis to Chicago. She said he was expressing his shock that a prominent figure like Young Dolph could be killed in his own neighborhood. Despite the family's clarification, the narrative linking Childs's death to his social media activity persisted in media reports.
