In the early afternoon of May 1, 2022, the life of 47-year-old John Patrick Cole was tragically cut short in Clarksville, Tennessee. A white male, Cole was discovered inside a vehicle on Power Street, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Clarksville Police had responded to a 'shooting in progress' call at approximately 1:06 p.m. and found Cole, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide quickly moved forward, and authorities assured the public that this was not a random act of violence, stating that the parties involved were known to one another. This suggested a more personal motive behind the grim discovery on that Sunday afternoon. Detectives from the Clarksville Police Department's Special Operations Homicide Unit diligently worked the case, leading to the identification of two suspects.
Within weeks, arrests were made. On May 9, 2022, 26-year-old Tristen James Deschapell was served with an arrest warrant for criminal homicide. At the time, Deschapell was already incarcerated in Carrollton, Georgia, on unrelated charges and awaited extradition back to Clarksville to face the new accusation. Following this, on June 1, a second individual, 47-year-old Natalie Rene Smull, was taken into custody at her residence in Clarksville. Smull was charged with tampering with evidence and being an accessory after the fact to criminal homicide, further deepening the narrative of a crime with interconnected players.
