In the fall of 2014, a tragic series of events unfolded in Philadelphia, leading to the death of 42-year-old Kenneth Woods, a Black male. On the evening of September 23rd, Woods was in the parking lot of a Popeye's Chicken restaurant on the 4200 block of Broad Street when he was shot in the chest. A private citizen rushed him to Temple University Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The investigation into Woods' death revealed a tangled web of crime and fear. Authorities identified 26-year-old Markese Martin as the gunman. The shooting was not a random act of violence but was connected to a robbery that had occurred outside the same fast-food restaurant. Investigators determined that Martin's motive for shooting Woods was to silence a potential witness. At the time of being charged with Woods' murder, Martin was already in custody for another shooting incident.
The case grew more complex as law enforcement delved deeper. Warrants were issued for two of Martin's alleged accomplices in the robbery, 20-year-old Megan Jones and 26-year-old Kord Rozier. The situation took another dark turn when it was discovered that one of the accomplices, Rozier, had been considering turning himself in to the authorities for his involvement in the robbery. This consideration may have led to further violence. In a separate incident shortly after the robbery, both Rozier and his pregnant girlfriend, Jasmine Williams, were shot and killed, along with their unborn child.
The string of violent acts prompted a significant law enforcement response, with a $40,000 reward being offered for information that would lead to the capture of Markese Martin. Despite the reward and the efforts of investigators, Martin remained at large for a period before he was eventually apprehended and charged.
