In a senseless act of violence on January 17, 2014, Jahmeer Jett, a 19-year-old Black male with a promising future as a boxer, was fatally shot in Southwest Philadelphia. The son of a Philadelphia police officer, Jett was known as a good kid who had never been in trouble with the law. He was walking home when an assailant approached him from behind and shot him multiple times in the back, just a short distance from his mother's house.
Jett was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he died from his injuries a short time later.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a dispute over a car. Authorities identified 25-year-old Kevin Davis as the suspect. According to police, Jett had purchased a car from Davis, but the vehicle broke down shortly after. When Jett returned the car and requested a refund, Davis refused. This led to a physical altercation between the two men, which Jett, being a skilled boxer, reportedly won.
Humiliated by the fight, Davis sought a violent revenge. In a cowardly act, he ambushed Jett, shooting the unarmed teenager in the back. The killing was described by investigators as a senseless and cowardly act, emphasizing that Jett was not involved in any illegal activity. Following an investigation, police located and arrested Kevin Davis, who was found hiding at his girlfriend's house. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Jahmeer Jett.
