On a warm summer evening in Philadelphia, the life of a young man was tragically cut short. Zafir Abdur-Rahman, a 23-year-old Black male, was standing with another man on the 7700 block of Williams Avenue in the East Mount Airy neighborhood on Tuesday, August 1, 2017. At approximately 7:30 p.m., their evening was shattered by the sudden eruption of gunfire.
A white compact sedan reportedly pulled alongside them, and an occupant began shooting.
The violent ambush left both men critically wounded. In the immediate aftermath, they were rushed in a private vehicle to Albert Einstein Medical Center. Abdur-Rahman had sustained a devastating gunshot wound to the right side of his head, while the other 23-year-old man was struck in the right arm and torso. Medical personnel worked to save both victims, but Abdur-Rahman's injuries proved to be too severe. He succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 2, 2017.
In the wake of the shooting, Philadelphia Police launched an investigation into the homicide. Despite their efforts, a motive for the attack has not been publicly identified. As of now, there have been no arrests made in connection with the murder of Zafir Abdur-Rahman, and no suspects have been publicly named. The case remains an open and unsolved homicide, leaving a family and community searching for answers and justice.
