Vasile Ballios, a 44-year-old male Greek immigrant, was shot and killed late on February 7, 1992, outside the Private Eyes Too Club at 61st Street and Passyunk Avenue in Philadelphia. Although his death occurred in Philadelphia, the available reporting described him as a Middletown, Delaware County man who had lived there for years after earlier stops in Chester and Brookhaven.
He was a husband, a father of two, and a longtime painter and painting supervisor.
The night turned violent inside the club, a go-go bar reported to be frequented by motorcyclists. Ballios and his friend, Luke Clark, were jumped by three men inside the bar. The confrontation spilled outside, and as Ballios tried to escape toward his truck, he was shot in the head. Clark survived but was treated at a hospital for cuts to his head.
Michael J. Gallagher, 35, of Somerville, New Jersey, was identified as a member of the Pagans motorcycle club and was accused of firing the fatal shot. Authorities said Gallagher was the only person charged in connection with Ballios’s murder, even though three men were described as taking part in the attack inside the bar.
Gallagher was tried in Philadelphia Common Pleas Court and convicted after a two-week trial of first-degree murder and related weapons offenses. The jury reportedly deliberated for about 35 minutes before reaching its verdict. After the conviction, Gallagher’s bail was revoked, and he was immediately jailed while any appeals were pending.
Gallagher was sentenced to life imprisonment for Ballios’s murder. Prosecutors said he would be transferred from county jail to Graterford Prison. The case closed not as an unsolved street killing, but as a murder prosecution that ended with a conviction and a life sentence for the man authorities said fired the shot that killed Ballios.
