Joshua Santos, a 20-year-old male of Hispanic ethnicity, tragically lost his life on January 28, 2018, in Reading, Pennsylvania. He was one of four victims in a quadruple homicide that occurred in a row house on South 3rd Street. The incident took place around 7 p.m. when multiple individuals opened fire inside the residence. The other victims were identified as 20-year-old Jarlyn Lantigua-Tejada, 23-year-old Juan Rodriguez, and 23-year-old Nelson Onofre.
Investigators believe the men were targeted, but no specific suspects or motives were immediately identified.
In the aftermath of the shooting, authorities conducted a thorough investigation. On April 6, 2021, federal authorities announced the arrest of Pedro Sanchez-Laporte, a 31-year-old man, in connection with the quadruple homicide. Sanchez-Laporte, along with other alleged members of a drug-trafficking organization, was believed to have confronted and opened fire on the victims, who were reportedly involved in narcotics sales. Sanchez-Laporte was taken into custody in Florida and was to be returned to Pennsylvania to face murder, drug, and firearms charges.
The case also led to the indictment of ten individuals from Reading, PA, on charges of murder, kidnapping, drug distribution, and firearms offenses. The charges stemmed from a years-long investigation into a drug trafficking organization known as "Trinidad," which operated in and around Reading. The defendants were accused of using violence, including multiple homicides, to further their drug-dealing activities.
The tragic loss of Joshua Santos and the other victims prompted a community vigil and widespread mourning. The investigation and subsequent arrests highlighted the severe impact of drug-related violence on communities and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to address such crimes.
