In the early morning hours of Sunday, April 5, 2026, a violent altercation inside the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Reading, Pennsylvania, claimed the life of 57-year-old Jorge Luis Ocasio-Ortiz. A resident of Reading who was born in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, Ocasio-Ortiz was tragically caught in the crossfire of a dispute in which he had no part.
He was a chef at Franklyn's Breakfast and Burgers and has been described by authorities as an innocent bystander.
The incident began to unfold after a concert when an argument broke out inside the hotel. The suspect, identified as Hamlet Vargas, a 46-year-old from Fairfield, Ohio, became involved in the confrontation. Witnesses reported that Vargas was upset over an alleged harassment incident involving his daughter that had occurred earlier in the evening. During the dispute, Vargas left the hotel and went to the parking garage to retrieve a firearm from his vehicle.
Upon returning to the hotel, Vargas re-entered a chaotic scene where a physical fight was in progress. He joined the fray and fired a single shot, which struck Ocasio-Ortiz in a first-floor hallway. Police were dispatched to the hotel at approximately 12:52 a.m. and found Ocasio-Ortiz with a gunshot wound. He was transported to Reading Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:25 a.m. Authorities have emphasized that Ocasio-Ortiz was not involved in the initial dispute.
Hamlet Vargas was taken into custody at the scene. He has since been charged with first-degree murder, third-degree murder, and aggravated assault. Following his arraignment, Vargas was committed to Berks County Jail without bail. His preliminary hearing was scheduled for April 17, 2026. Reading's mayor described the shooting as a "tragic and isolated incident."
