On April 25, 2021, 23-year-old Walner Torres-Santana, a male of Hispanic ethnicity, was fatally shot in the 300 block of Pear Street in Reading, Pennsylvania. Torres-Santana was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Reading Hospital for emergency surgery, but he succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy confirmed that he died from the gunshot wounds.
The investigation revealed that Torres-Santana had arranged to meet with Roland Pena, 22, of the 700 block of
Schuylkill Avenue, to settle a dispute. Witnesses reported hearing an argument and three gunshots. Evidence collected from the scene included five spent shell casings and a cellphone belonging to Torres-Santana. The phone contained messages indicating that Torres-Santana had given his address to Pena shortly before the shooting. Surveillance footage and witness testimonies implicated Pena in the shooting.
Roland Pena was apprehended on April 29, 2021, while attempting to board a plane at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. He was charged with first-degree murder, criminal conspiracy, and related counts. In April 2023, a jury found Pena guilty on all charges. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder conviction, along with additional concurrent sentences for conspiracy, carrying a firearm without a license, and possessing instruments of crime.
