In the Olney neighborhood of Philadelphia, on October 15, 2018, a 35-year-old Black man named Munir Jobes was shot and killed. The incident occurred at the intersection of 16th and Conlyn Streets just after 11:35 in the morning. According to his family, Jobes was acting as a peacemaker, attempting to intervene and mediate a dispute that had broken out among a group of young people.
Family members believe that the tragedy was a case of mistaken identity, asserting that the individuals who
shot him were actually targeting someone else. In the wake of the shooting, friends and family gathered to remember Jobes and to publicly call for justice for his death. His cousin, Shakia Lawhorn, stated that he was trying to 'keep peace amongst young people that need to stop killing each other over absolute nonsense.' His aunt, Shakira Blakley, expressed the pain of having to bury a loved one.
The Philadelphia Police Department opened an investigation into the homicide, believing that two men are responsible for the shooting. Despite their ongoing efforts and pleas to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Munir Jobes. The investigation remains active as authorities continue to seek assistance from the community to bring those responsible to justice.
