Eliezer Mendez, a 22-year-old male of Hispanic ethnicity, tragically lost his life on May 19, 2015, in Philadelphia, PA. He was fatally shot in the chest near the 2000 block of East Stella Street in Kensington, Pennsylvania. The investigation into his death led to the arrest of Rhaheem Friend, who was a witness and possibly a suspect in the murder.
Friend claimed to have a computer tablet containing potential evidence in the murder, as well as an illegal firearm in his sister's closet.
Detective Philip Nordo, who was handling the case, arrested Friend and fabricated a story to seize the tablet and the gun. Nordo also charged Gerald Camp, Friend's sister's boyfriend, with possession of the firearm and removing its serial number. However, it was later revealed that Nordo had engaged in serious misconduct, including depositing money into Friend's prison commissary account and having a close relationship with him.
Due to the misconduct, the murder case against Darnell Powell, who was facing a potential life sentence in connection with Mendez's death, was dropped in 2018. The judge ruled that Nordo's actions were "outrageous," and the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office declined to appeal the ruling. Nordo was subsequently fired from the Philadelphia Police Department.
The case highlights the impact of police misconduct on the justice system and the importance of ensuring fair and impartial investigations. The tragic death of Eliezer Mendez remains a stark reminder of the need for accountability and transparency in law enforcement.
