John M. Young, a 60-year-old man, was found shot to death early in the morning of September 16, 2020, at a bus stop in South Austin, Texas. He was experiencing homelessness and was sleeping on the bus stop bench when he was killed. The Austin Police Department responded to a call about a man bleeding at the scene and pronounced him dead shortly after arrival.
The Travis County Medical Examiner's office conducted an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death.
The investigation into Young's death revealed that there was no apparent motive for the murder. However, APD homicide detectives believe that the killing might have been a random attack, as Young was asleep at the time and there were no signs that he was specifically targeted. Surveillance video reviewed by detectives led them to believe that two individuals were involved in the attack—one on foot and one in a vehicle. The suspect on foot was described as a male in his teens or 20s with a thin build.
APD released surveillance footage of a white Lexus SUV and a person of interest seen in the area at the time of the shooting. The department offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and urged anyone with information or video of the incident to come forward. Despite the ongoing investigation, no arrests have been made in connection with Young's death.
The case remains open, and APD continues to seek information from the public to help solve the crime. The lack of evidence and motive has made it challenging for detectives to make significant progress, but they remain committed to finding justice for John M. Young.
