In the winter of 2019, a night at the movies in York, Pennsylvania, turned deadly, leaving a young man's life cut short and a community in shock. Andre White Jr., a 22-year-old male, was fatally shot inside the Regal Cinemas in West Manchester Township on the night of December 2nd. The incident, which also resulted in injury to a woman, was not a random act of violence, according to investigators, who believed the suspect and victim knew each other.
White was rushed to York Hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into White's death quickly focused on two individuals. Jalen Bellaflores was arrested a few days after the shooting and initially faced charges including criminal homicide. The man identified as the shooter, Anu-Malik Johnson, then 20 years old, was located and apprehended in New Jersey 16 days after the incident. He was charged with criminal homicide and aggravated assault, among other offenses. Prosecutors initially sought the death penalty against Johnson, a decision that was later reversed. The charges against Bellaflores were eventually dropped.
Anu-Malik Johnson's case went to trial, where his defense team argued that he acted in self-defense. The trial concluded in December 2024 with a jury acquitting Johnson of all charges, including first-degree homicide and aggravated assault. The jury found that Johnson's actions were justifiable. While acquitted of the homicide charges, Johnson did plead guilty to illegal possession of a firearm in connection with the incident and awaited sentencing on that charge. Several other individuals were also charged with hindering apprehension for their roles in assisting Johnson after the shooting.
