In the afternoon of June 8, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a North Philadelphia street. When police arrived at the 2500 block of Mutter Street shortly after 2:15 p.m., they discovered a grim scene. Inside a black 2015 Honda Civic, a man, later identified as 42-year-old Debon Butler, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his head and body.
A Black male, Butler was pronounced deceased at the scene by medics.
The brazen daylight shooting left the community stunned and investigators with a complex case. Details surrounding the motive for the attack on Butler were not immediately clear, and the search for those responsible began. Law enforcement officials confirmed that an investigation was underway, but no weapons were recovered from the scene and no arrests were immediately made.
