On November 9, 2021, Ryan Groff, a 29-year-old man from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was shot and killed in Philadelphia's LOVE Park. Groff, who was trying to start over in Philadelphia, became involved in an altercation with Gregory Thomas Sr., a 43-year-old security guard working for a private security company hired by the organizers of the annual Christmas Village exhibit.
