In the early morning hours of February 18, 2021, the life of 16-year-old Kahlief Myrick was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. A junior at South Philadelphia High School, Kahlief was known for his outgoing personality and creative spirit, even starting his own clothing line called Immortal Never Die. He was a beloved son, brother, and friend, described by his mother as engaging and someone who loved to be around people.
On that fateful day, at approximately 4:00 a.m., Kahlief and his cousin were at a 7-Eleven on 70th Street in Southwest Philadelphia. Inside the store, they had a brief verbal exchange with a much older man. After the man left the store, he waited outside for Kahlief to exit. When Kahlief stepped out of the convenience store, the man shot him. Police arrived to find Kahlief on the ground with a gunshot wound and rushed him to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries an hour later.
The investigation into Kahlief's murder led police to identify Donald Whitingham as the suspect. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and for a period, his whereabouts remained unknown, with law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Marshals, actively searching for him. The case was featured in local news as they sought the public's help in locating the fugitive.
After a lengthy search, a suspect was taken into custody. On July 19, 2024, an arrest was made in connection with the death of Kahlief Myrick. The case is now pending trial, bringing a measure of hope to a family that has endured unimaginable pain and loss, as they continue to wait for justice for Kahlief.
