Juan Carlos Robles-Corana, a 15-year-old Black male, was killed on Monday, April 4, 2022, in North Philadelphia, in a shooting that unfolded within steps of ordinary after-school life. Investigators described the shooting as an ambush. Early reports said the gunman, or gunmen, came toward Juan Carlos as he walked along 15th Street and opened fire in broad daylight. Police Captain John Walker said investigators were not yet sure whether there had been one or two shooters, but about 20 shots were fired; other accounts later described nearly 30 shots. Juan Carlos was struck four times, including in the torso, and the scene left neighbors, classmates, and his family trying to understand how a school day ended with a child dying in the street.
Police said the shooting appeared to follow a series of fights or a confrontation involving Juan Carlos and at least two shooters over the preceding weekend. His mother, Maria Balbuena, told reporters that he had been involved in an incident at school before the shooting and had left the building earlier than usual. She said he had been on his way to pick up his brothers and never made it. The Philadelphia Obituary Project described Juan Carlos, known to loved ones as JR, as a charismatic child who had recently helped his family take in one of his friends after that friend's home had been riddled with bullets.
