In the early morning hours of September 1, 1972, a violent encounter in a Philadelphia after-hours club brought a tragic end to the life of James Boatwright, a 25-year-old African American man. Boatwright had entered the establishment with his friend, Samuel Hill, to meet his common-law wife, Betty McClenton. After a brief exchange, McClenton stepped outside to speak with a friend.
