In the closing days of 2023, a knock at the door shattered the peace of a winter night in Northeast Philadelphia, leading to the tragic death of 33-year-old Bilal Henry. On the evening of Thursday, December 28th, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Henry was at his Regency Townhomes residence on Woodhaven Road with his wife and young children when he responded to the sound at his front door.
In an act of brutal violence, he was met with a hail of gunfire.
The initial shots were fired from outside the door, after which it is believed at least two gunmen entered the home and continued to fire upon Henry. He was struck multiple times in the head and torso and was pronounced dead at the scene by medics. His family, who were upstairs at the time of the ambush, were not physically harmed but were left to witness the devastating aftermath. Investigators found at least 13 shell casings at the scene, indicating the intensity of the attack.
In the wake of the shooting, the Philadelphia police began their investigation, noting that the motive was unclear. There were no immediate signs of a robbery, as nothing appeared to be taken from the home, nor was the residence ransacked. Authorities were seeking surveillance footage from the area in the hopes of identifying the assailants. Witnesses reported seeing two men in dark clothing fleeing the scene, possibly escaping in a white vehicle.
Bilal Henry, affectionately known as 'Mr. B,' was a cherished member of the Mayfair Elementary School community, where he had worked since 2018. As a climate staff member, he was dedicated to creating a positive and safe environment for students. His sudden and violent death was a profound loss for his family, friends, and the school community he served. As of late December 2023, no arrests had been made in connection with his murder, and the case remains an open and active investigation.
