In the early hours of March 18, 2021, 20-year-old Rodney Hargrove was released from the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility in Philadelphia. Less than an hour after he walked out of the prison, he was shot and killed on the jail grounds in what police have described as a tragic case of mistaken identity. Hargrove, a male, had been incarcerated for about a week on theft and weapons charges before a bail company posted his $200,000 bond.
After his release around 1:10 a.m., Hargrove was
dropped off at a SEPTA bus stop across the street from the jail complex to wait for his family to pick him up. While he was waiting, a dark-colored vehicle approached him. Hargrove ran back onto the prison grounds, pursued by the vehicle which was able to enter through a raised security gate. Near the main entrance, the occupants of the car shot Hargrove multiple times before speeding away. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.
In April 2021, authorities arrested 16-year-old Ameen Hurst and charged him with the murder of Rodney Hargrove. Police believe Hurst was at least one of the individuals responsible for the shooting, which they assert was a case of mistaken identity. Hurst was also implicated in three other homicides.
Hargrove's family filed a wrongful death and civil rights lawsuit following his murder. In November 2024, Ameen Hurst pleaded guilty to four counts of third-degree murder, including the killing of Rodney Hargrove. The investigation revealed that Hurst and his associates had received information that a rival was being released from the jail and had gone there to ambush him. They fatally shot Hargrove, believing him to be their intended target, and then ran over his body with their car.
