On November 9, 2024, a tragic shooting occurred outside Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills, Illinois, resulting in the death of 41-year-old Shamaree Siller of Chicago. The incident took place around 1:30 p.m. during a junior high school boys' basketball tournament. Siller, who was attending the event with his middle-school-aged son, was targeted by multiple armed suspects wearing masks and hoodies. These suspects were waiting in a black 4-door Infiniti Q50 sedan in the school's parking lot and blocked Siller from reaching his car as he and his son were leaving the tournament.
The suspects exited the vehicle and opened fire on Siller, who was shot in front of his son. The perpetrators then fled the scene, heading southbound through the parking lot towards Pulaski Road. Siller was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified him as the victim.
The Country Club Hills police have released surveillance images of the black Infiniti Q50, which is believed to be the getaway car used by the suspects. There is no evidence to suggest that the offenders entered the school building or that the victim was involved in any altercation inside the school. The incident is isolated, and no other injuries were reported among the players, coaches, or staff.
This shooting marks the second tragic incident at Hillcrest High School in just over a year. In September 2023, a freshman student named Marshawn Mitchell was shot and killed outside the school after a homecoming football game, and an active reward remains for information on his death.
The school district has made counseling services available for students and staff following the incident. Parents and community members have expressed their shock and grief, calling for increased police presence and better safety measures at school events. The Country Club Hills Police Department is continuing the investigation and urges anyone with information to contact them.
