On September 15, 2023, a tragic incident occurred in Country Club Hills, Illinois, when 14-year-old Marshawn Mitchell was fatally shot after a homecoming football game at Hillcrest High School. Mitchell, a freshman who had only been at the school for a few days, was leaving the game between the Hillcrest Hawks and the Oak Forest Bengals when gunfire erupted around 9 p.m. in the area of 174th Street and Pulaski Road.
