On a Monday evening in Philadelphia, a mother’s last phone call with her son was a routine check-in. It was 6:36 p.m. on October 10, 2022, when Jasmine Wilcox spoke to 13-year-old Jeremiah Nasir Wilcox, a male eighth-grader who was just outside a friend's house in his West Oak Lane neighborhood. He assured her he was fine and, being a school night, promised to be home by 8 p.m.
Tragically, just twelve minutes after that call, the sounds of gunfire shattered the evening air on the 6500 block of North Smedley Street, only a block from his middle school.
Jeremiah, known affectionately as 'Jay' or 'Jerry,' was struck multiple times by the gunfire, with wounds to his head and body. A 14-year-old friend and his mother rushed to his side, desperately performing CPR and trying to staunch the bleeding as he lay on the sidewalk. Their efforts were valiant but ultimately in vain against the severity of his injuries. Police soon arrived and transported him to Einstein Medical Center, but he succumbed to his wounds about three hours later without ever regaining consciousness. His family remembers him as a sweet and funny boy with a bright smile who loved to make people laugh. He was protective of his family, enjoyed playing football and basketball with friends, and had a passion for anime and video games. He and his mother, who had raised him largely on her own since she was 16, had just begun looking at high schools, with Jeremiah showing interest in an engineering program.
The motive for the shooting remains a mystery to investigators, who have yet to determine why the young boy was targeted. Witnesses reported seeing two young males, possibly wearing masks, fleeing the area immediately after the shots were fired. Despite interviewing witnesses and investigating the scene, the Philadelphia Police Department has made no arrests in the case, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The case remains an unsolved homicide. Jeremiah's family, consumed by grief, is left clinging to the memory of a boy with a goofy and loving nature whose life was cut short. They, along with community leaders, have called for justice and an end to the gun violence that claimed his future. A significant reward has been offered for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for his death.
