On April 20, 2021, 15-year-old TréVon Dickson was fatally shot on the East Side of Columbus, Ohio. The incident occurred around 3:50 p.m. on the 3200 block of Marion Place. According to police reports, Dickson and another 15-year-old, Nasir Ndiaye, were involved in an altercation that led to gunfire. Dickson was found at the scene and rushed to Mount Carmel East Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:31 p.m.
Ndiaye, who was also shot during the exchange, was taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital for treatment.
Ndiaye was later charged with murder in Franklin County Juvenile Court. He was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter while committing a misdemeanor crime and was sentenced to three years of probation with a mental health evaluation. If he violates his probation, he could face three years in adult prison. Ndiaye claimed he shot in self-defense, but prosecutors disputed this account.
The shooting stemmed from a drug deal, according to prosecutors. Ndiaye, along with his older brother and two others, went to Dickson's home to sell him a half ounce of marijuana. The tragic incident marked the 62nd homicide in Columbus in 2021.
Dickson's mother, Shawna Brady, has been vocal about seeking justice for her son. She expressed frustration and anger over the sentencing, feeling that it did not provide the closure she hoped for. Despite the loss, Brady continues to advocate for her son's legacy and fights for justice.
The case highlights the devastating impact of gun violence on young lives and the complexities of the legal system in addressing such tragedies. Dickson, who was in eighth grade and had only been 15 for three months, was remembered as an average teenager involved in football and community activities.
