Michael Holland, a 41-year-old Black man who had attended the Ohio State Barber College and worked at Voyant Beauty, was killed in his Columbus, Ohio, neighborhood in the fall of 2023.
On the evening of November 10, 2023, a dispute broke out between Holland and another man, 22-year-old Thomas Lacey III. The confrontation occurred around 5:50 p.m. in the 2800 block of Landon Drive in the Berwyn West neighborhood.
According to court documents, the argument escalated, and Lacey shot Holland multiple times.
When police arrived, they found Holland with a gunshot wound. He was transported to Grant Medical Center in critical condition but was pronounced dead at 6:28 p.m. Lacey remained at the scene of the shooting, where officers identified him as the suspect and took him into custody.
Lacey was charged with murder. At his arraignment, a judge set his bond at just over $1 million and stipulated that he could not possess firearms or return to the location of the incident. The case against him proceeded through the courts, ultimately concluding with a conviction. For the murder of Michael Holland, Thomas Lacey III was sentenced to a prison term of at least 11 years, which could last as long as 16 and a half years.
