Lawrence L. Jefferson, a 51-year-old African American man, tragically lost his life on April 26, 2022, in Columbus, Ohio. He was working at the Executive Barber Salon on Northmeadows Boulevard when he was shot by Jermaine King, a 40-year-old man. Jefferson had only been working at the barbershop for about a month. The incident occurred in broad daylight, and Jefferson was pronounced dead at the scene.
King was identified as the suspect through video surveillance footage and witness
accounts. According to police reports, King parked his vehicle at a nearby apartment complex, walked to the barbershop through an alley, and entered the business. Inside, he shot Jefferson at least twice before fleeing the scene. King was later arrested and charged with aggravated murder. He was held at Franklin County Jail with a $1.2 million bond set during his court appearance.
During the trial, King claimed that the shooting was accidental and that Jefferson had grabbed his gun during a scuffle. However, the jury convicted King of murder but found him not guilty of aggravated murder. Jefferson's family, including his wife Danille Jefferson and his mother Mattie Mae Jefferson, expressed their grief and frustration over the loss. Danille Jefferson also mentioned that King had previously threatened her husband.
The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gun violence in Columbus, with Jefferson's death being the 37th homicide in the city that year. The community and Jefferson's family continue to seek justice and closure for the loss of a beloved husband, father, and friend.
