On August 3, 2024, at approximately 11:29 PM, Columbus police officers responded to a shooting in the 800 block of Murray Avenue, near East 5th Avenue, in Columbus, Ohio. Upon arrival, they found 36-year-old Dajuan Rios suffering from a gunshot wound in the front yard of a residence.
Rios was immediately transported to Grant Medical Center in critical condition. Despite receiving life-saving care, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 3:21 AM on August 4, 2024.
As the investigation progressed, authorities identified 34-year-old Brittney Nicole McBride as the primary suspect in Rios's death. It was revealed that Rios and McBride had a history of a violent domestic relationship. Court records indicated that McBride had previously stabbed Rios and had an outstanding felonious warrant at the time of the shooting.
During the investigation, detectives reviewed 911 calls and discovered that a female caller, believed to be McBride, had reported the shooting as a passerby. The caller claimed to have witnessed someone fall near a driveway after hearing a gunshot and saw a person standing in a doorway when the shot was fired.
On August 26, 2024, more than three weeks after the incident, Columbus police arrested Brittney McBride. She was charged with murder in connection with Rios's death and was subsequently booked into the Franklin County Jail.
McBride is currently being held on an $800,000 bond. The case remains under investigation by the Columbus Division of Police Homicide Bureau, with Detective K. Kirby leading the investigation, assisted by Detective Journey.
