Esak Tilahun Gemeraw, a 21-year-old male of Ethiopian ethnicity, tragically lost his life on March 20, 2015, in Columbus, OH. He was a passenger in a minivan traveling near the Little Caesars Pizza shop at 5611 Chatterton Rd when someone fired shots into the vehicle. Gemeraw was struck by the gunfire and later succumbed to his injuries at Mount Carmel East Hospital.
The van's driver managed to drive several blocks to a friend's house to call for help.
Authorities initially had no suspects or motives and were looking for three individuals who fled the scene. However, on April 14, 2015, Nishawn Glenn-Coulverson, a 19-year-old gang member affiliated with the James and Livingston Hot Boys, was arrested and charged with Gemeraw's murder. Glenn-Coulverson was found guilty of murder and two counts of felonious assault in the death of Gemeraw. The jury also found him guilty of gun and gang specifications, and he faced a maximum penalty of 43 years to life.
The investigation revealed that Glenn-Coulverson committed the crime without any apparent reason, possibly to enhance his reputation within his gang. The murder weapon was not recovered, but testing established that all 10 shots were fired from a 9mm handgun. The case highlighted the dangers of gang violence and the impact it has on innocent bystanders.
Gemeraw's death was the 15th homicide in Columbus that year, and the investigation into his murder brought attention to the broader issues of gang violence and community safety in the area.
