Patrolman Frank P. Ward, aged 34, was shot and killed on June 9, 1911, in Columbus, Ohio. He had joined the Columbus Division of Police just one month earlier, on May 8, 1911. Ward responded to a domestic disturbance call on Lehman Street, where a man was threatening his family with a shotgun. Upon arrival, the suspect opened fire, mortally wounding Ward. Despite his injuries, Ward managed to return fire and fatally wound the suspect.
