Rusty Lee Oehlers, a 27-year-old white male from Columbus, Ohio, tragically passed away on February 21, 2017, after being shot the previous day. The incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. on February 20, 2017, on South Hague Avenue. Oehlers was one of two victims who were transported to Mount Carmel West Hospital by apparent witnesses to the shooting. Unfortunately, Rusty succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The shooting was reportedly the result of a botched robbery attempt. Columbus Police Department investigated the case, but as of now, no arrests have been made, and the case remains unsolved. The investigation is part of the Homicide Cold Case Unit Archive, and authorities continue to seek information from the public to bring justice to Rusty Oehlers' family.
Despite the tragic circumstances, Rusty Oehlers is remembered fondly by his family and friends. He was a graduate of Fairfield Union High School, where he excelled in wrestling, cross country, and band. He also had a passion for sports, cooking, and music. Rusty is survived by his son, Killian Maverick Oehlers, and his parents, Kenneth J. Jr. and Dolly Anderson Oehlers, among other family members.
The Columbus Police Department and the Ohio Attorney General's Office continue to work on this case, urging anyone with information to come forward. The investigation remains open, and authorities are committed to solving this tragic crime and providing closure to Rusty Oehlers' loved ones.
