On August 15, 2016, 22-year-old Malyk Shelby was shot during a domestic dispute at the Columbus Park apartment complex on Winslow Drive, on the Southeast Side of Columbus, Ohio. Officers and medics responded at 4:19 p.m. to a reported incident involving Shelby and his live-in girlfriend. Upon arrival, they found Shelby suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to Grant Medical Center, where he died less than an hour later.
The dispute between Shelby and his 20-year-old girlfriend escalated to the shooting. No charges were initially filed, and the investigation continued, with the girlfriend's identity withheld during the process. Shelby's death marked the 62nd homicide of that year in Columbus.
