James Joseph McConkey, a 25-year-old male police officer with the Fayetteville Police Department in North Carolina, tragically lost his life on December 3, 1977. Officer McConkey was on foot patrol in downtown Fayetteville due to a recent increase in burglaries in the area. During his patrol, he encountered three suspicious men and attempted to apprehend them. A struggle ensued, and the suspect managed to gain control of Officer McConkey's service weapon, using it to shoot him.
