Ronald Potts, a 47-year-old Black man from Selma, North Carolina, was fatally shot on July 10, 2016, in Fayetteville, NC. The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of Rim Road. Ronald Potts was identified as the victim by the Fayetteville Police Department.
Following the shooting, the Fayetteville Police Department arrested 21-year-old Russell McCants-McGill, also a Black man from Fayetteville, on charges of first-degree murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling, assault
with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, and possession of a firearm by a felon. McCants-McGill was taken into custody without incident and held without bond. The investigation revealed that McCants-McGill had multiple outstanding felony probation violation warrants.
The shooting also resulted in injuries to another person, who was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation continued as detectives worked to gather more information about the incident.
